Joseph Haydn wrote sixty-eight string quartets. The number was previously thought to be eighty-three, but this includes some arrangements and spurious works.
Haydn: Prussian String Quartet. The Tokyo Quartet’s survey of Opus 50 is a latter-day El Dorado. It’s reputed to be out there somewhere. Werner Herzog evidently foresaw this dynamic ahead of time when he penned ‘Aguirre, the Wrath of God’ where the protagonist was initially seeking such a copy of these Prussian Quartets in downtown Des Moines before the decision was made to transfer the narrative to Sixteenth Century Peru (which was an easier get ). Copies are rarer than virgins on Ibiza. DG never did it any favours as there’s no money in Haydn’s string quartets
