You really can just drift off to this.
It’s this identity, carried throughout The Return of the Durutti Column that makes it such a special and unique record – not to mention the fact that original vinyl copies were housed in a sleeve made from sandpaper, deliberately designed to scratch the surface of neighbour shelf sleeves . Unique, intricate, mysterious and beautifully made; The Return of the Durutti Column is an obscure album that deserves to be lifted out of such a status. Give it a try and drift off into Vini Reilly’s distinctive world.
Durutti Column Format: Vinyl. The Return of The Durutti Column. A collaboration between virtuoso guitarist Vini Reilly and legendary Manchester producer Martin Hannett, The Return of the Durutti Column paired Reilly s non-rock sketches with Hannett s electronic textures to produce perfectly realised, correctly ambient and inventive music (NME). The infamous sandpaper sleeve was somewhat less user friendly.

Thanks also to Gammer for his melody and Rowbotham, Reid and Debord for the marketing concept.
It was Tony Wilson who had the idea for the cover, following Situationist Guy Debord's book "Mémoires" also wrapped in sandpaper to destroy the adjacent books. Gammer refers to N.H. Gammer, founder of Gammer And His Familiars, Reilly's first band. Rowbotham refers to Dave Rowbotham, the former DC founder and guitarist. Reid refers to Jamie Reid, who apparently wanted to title the first Sex Pistols album "Where's the Durutti Column?"
The covers were assembled by Joy Division, A Certain Ratio and others. While Ian Curtis did the glueing, the other members of Joy Division watched a porn movie in the same room.
In 'D' is in fact another version of Sketch For Winter.
Reissued in July 1980 with a black picture sleeve but without flexi.
