Not so with this three-disc set of all Rachmaninov's songs issued in 2007. Instead of being organized by singer as the original discs had been, the songs are organized chronologically. This not only provides a more cogent view of the Russian composer's songs, it permits a respite from hearing the same voice for very long.

The complete Works for Piano and Orchestra, with Rafael Orozco playing the extraordinarily demanding piano score, which Serge; with his huge, slender, nimble fingers tended to compose to impress people and make many back away, is more than merely admirable when combined with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, under the Direction of Edo De Waart. Russian Music became my passion when I first saw "The Seven Year Itch" many, many moons ago, so I know from whence I speak.
