The four albums Dr. John recorded for Parlophone leading up to this compilation were very distinct projects. The first, 1998's Anutha Zone, functioned as the New Orleans legend's return to trans-Atlantic critical respectability, thanks to a parade of British admirers (Paul Weller, J Spaceman of Spiritualized, and Gaz Coombes of Supergrass among others).

Including selections from Duke Elegant, Creole Moon, N'Awlinz: Dis Dat or D'Udda, and Anutha Zone, as well as two bonus tracks, The Best of the Parlophone Years presents Dr. John doin' what he does best. With that voice, there's no mistake who's settin' down the blues for ya. There are only a handful of voices in history which have been so widely recognized and so easy to tell from the rest.

This set draws from the four albums Dr. John recorded for the British Parlophone label from 1997 to 2004 (released in the United States on Blue Note and Virgin). In the several decades since his popular emergence as the Night Tripper he's become one of the respected elders of New Orleans music. These seventeen songs show him to be drawing from deep Crescent City traditions, as well as R&B, jazz, swing, balladry. The set also showcases his work with a range of notable guests (from Paul Weller to randy Newman to Mavis Staples). This is a great album for people interested in hearing what Dr. John is all about.

For several years, Parlophone claimed the best-selling UK single, "She Loves You", and the best-selling UK album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, both by the Beatles. The label placed seven singles at No. 1 during 1964, when it claimed top spot on the UK Albums Chart for 40 weeks. Parlophone also absorbed the 1989 self-titled debut album of Tin Machine, one of the Bowie's many sideprojects.
