Philippe Garrel’s 1968 film Le Révélateur, made at a time of infamous upheaval in his home country France, is, like Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic The Passion of Joan of Arc, intentionally silent, letting its powerful visual relationships between the characters-a young, curious boy and his parents-and the stark oft-fabricated environments that contain them do the talking. Given the film’s lyrical movement of contrasting light and anxious bodies, the vacuous overall silence becomes progressively heavier, almost unbearable, as the film proceeds through its 65-ish minutes. Garrel communicates themes of immobility, loneliness, containment, yearning, and distance with intimate clarity. Accordingly, track two of the soundtrack, ‘A Tunnel’, takes up similar concerns: Lattimore repeats a short, sedated theme that comes back again and again as the album unfolds.

With the blessing of the film's director, Philippe Garrel, the duo continued to perform the score along with additional screenings of the film. The studio recording of the film score, produced at Zeigler's own Uniform Recording, was released by Thrill Jockey in 2016. Lattimore often adds trippy delay effects to her harp playing, as she does on her solo recordings, giving the music a haunted, surrealist bent.

Le Révélateur - made during Garrel’s youthful Zanzibar Collective period spent on the Paris ‘68 frontlines - is a fractured and elliptical, but instinctive, elemental, and haunting rumination on the process of awakening, maturation, psychological trauma, and transformation of childhood memory (Strictly Film School). Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler weave an elaborate web of picturesque synth-scapes for Le Révélateur that will be featured on new album released by Thrill Jockey this July. Garrel’s Le Révélateur is a short experimental narrative film from 1968, a collaboration with noted French cinematographer Michael Fournier. The film, intentionally left silent, follows a young boy and his parents as they flee from a trauma that is only hinted at but never shown explicitly in the film. Lattimore and Zeigler’s dreamy yet suspenseful music is the perfect counterpart to accompany the plight of the characters of Le Révélateur. But the album, of course, stands on its own as well, telling a myriad of stories completely separate from the film. Often the tracks on the album are aural representations of visuals described in the title: like the gorgeous and glittering opener The Glittering Light.
