Grove (Digital Bonus) For many great artists, going back is the way to move forward. With this in mind, Berlin-based producer Recondite looked to his homeland of Lower Bavaria for his debut Ghostly International release, Hinterland. I tried to capture the area’s mentality and natural environment within the album, he explains. Particularly the moods that behold the emotions of the four seasons, which differ a lot in this region.

Recondite - Hinterland Judging from his music, Recondite is a melancholy guy. Starting out with delicate deep house on his Plangent label, moving onto the saddest 303 you've ever heard with On Acid and then banging out ice cold techno after that, his somber demeanor has been the glue holding it all together. Imagine a Smallville 12-inch on a trek through the German woods in the middle of January. The album's sound is deep and textured, but also lonely-there's a sort of deadened feeling to the drums that mirrors the eerie silence of walking through snow.

This album has an average beat per minute of 115 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 92/134 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Tracklist Hinterland.

The album sounds almost exactly like the picture on its cover: gray and sparse. The music breathes Berlin through and through, as the minimalist aestetic Brunner employs continues along the lines of dub techno pioneers Porter Ricks and the emotive compositions of Pantha du Prince. Riant', for example, is just gorgeous in how Brunner uses a single, simple synth pad to invoke maximal response from the listener.

Lorenz Brunner's first album as Recondite, On Acid, deweaponized acid. For Hinterland, also on Ghostly, Brunner dispenses with acid, yet he retains the downtempo approach across 49 minutes, enhanced with field recordings from his Bavarian hometown.
