Tom Harrell (born June 16, 1946) is an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, and arranger. Voted Trumpeter of the Year of 2018 byJazz Journalists Association, Harrell has won awards and grants throughout his career, including multiple Trumpeter of the Year awards from Down Beat magazine, SESAC Jazz Award, BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated) Composers Award, and Prix Oscar du Jazz. He received a Grammy Award nomination for his big band album, Time's Mirror.

Tom Harrell: I became aware of the music through listening and hearing music on the radio and especially when listening to records, especially modern jazz. My parents had a jazz anthology and also the RCA anthology. That was my first exposure to bebop, the music of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. There was a radio station located in northern California, KPFA: There was a show with Philip Ellwood and that’s when I first heard Clifford Brown and Horace Silver, that was exciting. EI: What were the specific Bird and Diz tracks on those early anthologies?

Tom Harrell: Paradise by Jack Bowers, published on October 1, 2001. Tom Harrell knows a lovely melody when he hears one, and has written several on his new album, Paradise, an ambitious enterprise that must have been a labor of love, as it is unlikely to earn the sort of recognition (Grammy Award nomination, et. he garnered with last year’s big–band release, Time’s Mirror. Which is not to say it’s less admirable than that one, only different. On Paradise, Harrell uses a core sextet augmented by strings to blend Jazz, classical and world music into a medley designed to arouse a variety of emotions from upbeat to melancholy.

Tom Harrell has been recording high-quality jazz for more than 50 years (starting in Stan Kenton's band in 1969). He never puts out a bad album and writes most of his own material. His last album, Moving Picture, featured him as the only horn, but this time he returns with first-tier sax player, Mark Turner, who was also featured on 2104's Trip. But also present is Charles Altura on guitar. Not sure if Harrel's played with a guitarist before, but it sure works here. The ever-reliable Ben street on Bass and Jonathan Blake on Drums round out the quintet. No piano on this date
