First Circle is a Grammy Award–winning jazz album by the Pat Metheny Group. Released in 1984, it is the group's fourth studio release. Metheny is joined by Lyle Mays on keyboards, Steve Rodby on bass, Paul Wertico on drums, and Pedro Aznar on vocals, percussion, and guitar. First Circle won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. Two personnel changes occurred.

In First Circle, the Pat Metheny Group settled into a lineup that lasted for quite a while - with Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Steve Rodby, and new drummer Paul Wertico forming the core quartet. The ever-restless Metheny also mixes up the music, not quite leaving the Brazilian glide behind but coming up with some fascinating permutations always affixed with his personal stamp. Forward March," the album opener, is a bizarre parody full of detuned instruments and half-cocked trumpet from Mays; one wonders if this was directed at a few silly skirmishes of the day (Grenada?.

The very first album from the 'Pat Metheny Group' comes across as a delightful april breeze. It was recorded in the days when Pat still limited himself to playing old-fashioned jazz guitar. Interestingly, on "San Lorenzo" it is Mays (on grand piano) and not Metheny who's granted an extended solo
