Double Concerto for violin, piano & orchestra. 2. Violin Concerto: I. Allegro con fuoco. Federico Elizalde, also known as Fred in his more "popular" activities, was born in 1907 in Navarra, Spain into a family from the Philippines. He studied in Madrid, London and the United States, where he discovered jazz, and was highly influential in the late twenties in his capacity as a bandleader of his ensemble The Quinquaginta Ramblers, in bringing jazz to Great Britain. In fact, the Elizalde was written for and premiered by Ferras, and recorded here in 1947 with Gaston Poulet conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. Since there are few orchestral works written for both piano and violin, the Semenoff Double Concerto, recorded in 1951 with the composer conducting Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire, gave Ferras the opprtunity to collaborate with recital partner Pierre Barbizet.

Primary Artist, Violin. Eckhardt van den Hoogen. Liner Note Translation. London Symphony Orchestra. Paris Conservatory Concert Society Orchestra.

The Violin Concerto by Federico Elizalde was premiered by Ginette Neveu in Paris in 1944, but Christian Ferras gave its London premiere under the direction of Gaston Poulet, in the presence of the composer, and made the world premiere recording on 7 November 1947, at the age of 14. In 1948 Ferras won First Prize at the international Scheveningen Festival; Yehudi Menuhin was among the judges. He premiered Arthur Honegger's Sonata for Solo Violin in the Salle Gaveau on 16 November 1948. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra. At some point in 1790–2, before his musical maturity, he began a Violin Concerto in C, of which only a fragment of the first movement survives. Whether the work, or even the first movement, had ever been completed is not known.

With the London Symphony Orchestra Poulet made recordings of Elizalde's Violin Concerto with the 14-year-old Christian Ferras (Decca, 1947), Spanish orchestral miniatures by Albeniz, Granados, Falla and Turina (MGM, 1953), Saint-Saens Violin Concerto N. in B minor O. 1 with Yehudi Menuhin (. 1953) and orchestral works by Ravel and Fauré.

The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, and is one of the best known violin concertos. The concerto is scored for solo violin, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A and B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, two trumpets in D, timpani and strings. The piece is in three movements: Allegro moderato (D major). Canzonetta: Andante (G minor). Finale: Allegro vivacissimo (D major). There is no break or pause between the second and third movements.
