JBK or Jansen Barbieri Karn, is the name by which former Japan and Rain Tree Crow band members Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri and Mick Karn have recorded several albums of music, all released by their own Medium Productions label, between 1993 and 2001. After the band project Rain Tree Crow was disbanded in 1991, the remaining three members decided to create a recording label so they could continue to creatively collaborate as well with other artists, without any pressure from record companies.

Stephen Batt (born 1 December 1959), known professionally as Steve Jansen, is an English musician, composer and record producer. He was a founding member of the band Japan, along with his brother David Sylvian (vocals, guitars and keyboards), Mick Karn (bass guitar), Richard Barbieri (keyboards), and Rob Dean (guitar), having all met in Catford.

JBK are capable of some exquisite work, but minus Sylvian they can be self indulgent, and Ism has far too many reference points. The excellent "Shallow Pool" throws in everything from sampled radio to violins. Barbieri's breezy synth work leads into a Jansen thrash for the chorus. Ism then struggles to find itself, descending into a confused mishmash of overlong vocal/instrumental tracks like "Carry the Ashes," which is semi-engaging but stretched too thin over eight minutes

When it came out, I immediately found it to be a disappointment, particularly given that Jansen/Barbieri's "Stone to Flesh" and Karn's "The Tooth Mother" were both so stunningly good, I had hopes for this to be a marriage of those tw. Deservedly so: Jansen, Baribieri, and Karn, together with absent ex-Japan member David Sylvian, are four incredibly creative musical talents who collided into musical genius together in the early 1980's. The splintering of the band after "Tin Drum" broke a lot of hearts among fans and has seen the ex-members pursue different directions from that musical pinnacle. Jansen, Barbieri, and Karn have frequently worked together in various guises over the last two decades (Sylvian, too, for that matter), often obscure and difficult to find, but mostly exceptional work.
