Plutonic rocks form from igneous intrusions deep in the Earth's crust. They are the most common rocks on Earth and form the basis of our continents. There are about a dozen major plutonic rock types and many more less common ones. Types are classified according to various triangular diagrams, starting with one based on the content of quartz (which is pure silica) and the two types of feldspar (which is quartz with impurities).
plutonic rock - noun large mass of intrusive igneous rock believed to have solidified deep within the earth, Syn: ↑batholith, ↑batholite, ↑pluton, Derivationally related forms: ↑plutonic (for: ↑pluton), ↑batholiti. seful english dictionary. Rock (geology) - In geology, rock is a naturally occurring aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids. The Earth s outer solid layer, the ‘lithosphere’, is made of rock. In general rocks are of three types, namely, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Igneous rock (derived from the Latin word ignis meaning fire), or magmatic rock, is one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. The magma can be derived from partial melts of existing rocks in either a planet's mantle or crust. Typically, the melting is caused by one or more of three processes: an increase in temperature, a decrease in pressure, or a change in composition.

In geology, a pluton is a body of intrusive igneous rock (called a plutonic rock) that is crystallized from magma slowly cooling below the surface of the Earth. While pluton is a general term to describe an intrusive igneous body, there has been some confusion around the world as to what is the definition of a pluton. Pluton has been used to describe any non-tabular intrusive body, and batholith has been used to describe systems of plutons.
