Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Marius Jacob, inspiration for Arsène Lupin. Curiously enough Robert Wagner who plays Sir Charles’ nephew later went on to play the role of Alexander Mundy in the TV series It Takes A Thief. Mundy is another high-caliber thief who finances his jet-setting, sophisticate lifestyle by stealing. Created in 1905 by the French writer Maurice Leblanc, Arsène Lupin quickly gained fame among readers as the most charming fictional gentleman thief.

Leblanc and Noblet were originally separate French woodwind manufacturing companies dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. However, the last Noblet, having no heirs, passed on his company to a Mr. G. Leblanc in 1904. Leblanc continued to make clarinets under the Noblet name. Later his son Leon greatly expanded and improved the business. The Leblanc family also worked with Charles Houvenaghel, a famed acoustic scientist. Leblanc and Houvenaghel designed new clarinets in unusual ranges.
