The first track from the band's debut album. The tempo, tone and technique of "Green Onions" make it one of the most recognized soul instrumentals. Booker T. & the . s consistently issued singles from 1963 to 1965, but only a few made the charts, and none was as successful as "Green Onions". Their second album, Soul Dressing, was released in 1965. Whereas the Green Onions album contained mostly covers, every composition but one on Soul Dressing was an original. 1998: Time Is Tight (3-CD; anthology including greatest hits/best of album tracks/rare material/live recordings). 2002: Stax Instrumentals (a further 25 unreleased tracks from the 1960s, Stax/Ace CDSXD-117) with the Mar-Keys. 2006: The Definitive Soul Collection (2-CD; 1962-1971 compilation, Rhino R2-77660).

The collection does jump around a bit across history in the course of covering the years 1963-1971, bouncing between late-'60s singles and album tracks and odd early/middle-'60s tracks. Booker-Loo," one of the pieces unique to this set, features some very crunchy rhythm guitar and flamboyant organ work in its intro, before Steve Cropper takes center stage with an unusually flashy lead guitar solo spot.
Moreover, Booker T. and the . s were a successful recording group in their own right, cutting ten albums and fourteen instrumental hits, including Green Onions, Hang ‘Em High, Time Is Tight and Soul-Limbo. The group came together in the early Sixties at Stax Records, a studio and record store on East McLemore Avenue in Memphis. In 2011 Jones released the critically acclaimed album The Road From Memphis, featuring guest appearances from Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones and Lou Reed. Inductees: Steve Cropper (guitar; born October 21, 1941), Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass; born November 24, 1941, died May 13, 2012), Al Jackson Jr. (drums; born November 27, 1935, died October 1, 1975), Booker T. Jones (organ, piano; born November 12, 1944), Lewis Steinberg (bass; born September 13, 1933, died July 21, 2016).
The third album by Jack and Meg White was the right dynamite for a mainstream breakthrough. Jack’s Delta-roadhouse fantasies, Detroit-garage-rock razzle and busted-love lyricism, as well as Meg’s toy-thunder drumming all peaked at once. Loretta Lynn, ‘All Time Greatest Hits’.
