Concerning Le Sacre, Stravinsky outdoes Karajan, Ozawa, Thomas, Boulez, and that awful "Fantasia" sequence with the dinosaurs from 1940! What is so special about hearing Le Sacre as Stravinksy envisioned it is that he is in charge; he is indicating how he wants it to be played. The Glorification of the Chosen One" is the most exciting moment in the score, and Stravinsky conducts it with fiery passion. The Sacrificial Dance" is also played very well. I was very pleased with the recording. Still, Stravinsky was aging and although he still did a very good job of conducting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, it pales compared to the energy of Bernstein and the Philharmonic. 11 people found this helpful.
