Before the 60's, most Blues records sold as singles, so most of the selections here are compilation albums. After the 60's we have selected the outstanding album or the live set which shows the best of the artist's talents. Our list covers all ages of the Blues, from the early Country Music styles through to the electric Blues of the City. The Blues has traveled around the world and back again, and our list reflects this and they do! but to our ears they sound pretty good.

British blues: Direct from the Delta to Dartford and beyond, the Blues turned British rock on its head. The tracks on their second album are an eclectic bunch, blending the blues with folk, country, gospel and even prog. And they sound better now than they did then. 26. Juicy Lucy - Juicy Lucy (Vertigo, 1969). Juicy Lucy took their name from a character – a prostitute, in case you were wondering – in Virgin Soldiers, Leslie Thomas’s novel about troops serving in the Far East. These Staffordshire blues terriers sounded a bit too much like John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers on their first album but the follow-up, Plays On, branched out in several directions. The addition of a mellotron to the mix brings a progressive dimension to the sound, notably on Mum’s The Word based on Also Sprach Zarathustra (the 2001 theme).

Criteria: These "Blues" albums were chosen to showcase the artists musical vision through their impact, originality, influence, creative inspiration & musical quality. This list does not include "greatest hits, best of, live albums, box sets OR albums by those artists who did not exhibit a clear blues thread throughout their careers. Last Updated: 2007-02-16.
