Vivaldi, Sammartini, Paradies, Pellegrini, Rudolf Ewerhart, Die Deutschen Barocksolisten – Italienische Orgelkonzerte Des Barock - Baroque Organ Works From Italy.
The most celebrated baroque decorative works of the High Baroque are the Chair of Saint Peter (1647–53) and the Baldachino of St. Peter (1623–34), both by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The Baldequin of St. Peter is an example of the balance of opposites in Baroque art; the gigantic proportions of the piece, with the apparent lightness of the canopy; and the contrast between the solid twisted columns, bronze, gold and marble of the piece with the flowing draperies of the angels on the canopy. The Dresden Frauenkirche serves as a prominent example. The Swiss-born art historian Heinrich Wölfflin (1864–1945) started the rehabilitation of the word Baroque in his Renaissance und Barock (1888); Wölfflin identified the Baroque as "movement imported into mass", an art antithetic to Renaissance art.
Baroque painting often dramatizes scenes using chiaroscuro light effects; this can be seen in works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Le Nain and La Tour. The Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck developed a graceful but imposing portrait style that was very influential, especially in England. It was first rehabilitated by the Swiss-born art historian, Heinrich Wölfflin (1864–1945) in his Renaissance und Barock (1888); Wölfflin identified the Baroque as "movement imported into mass", an art antithetic to Renaissance art. He did not make the distinctions between Mannerism and Baroque that modern writers do, and he ignored the later phase, the academic Baroque that lasted into the 18th century.
The notes included in this album by the Berliner Barock Solisten provide a very small amount of actual historical information and instead are used as a non-stop, self-congratulatory marketing tool, stopping just short of declaring it to be the best Baroque chamber ensemble in existence. This seems not only unnecessary (after all, if you're reading the notes you've probably already bought the CD), but also a bit off the mark. Sure, the performances of these seven Vivaldi concertos are lively, spirited, even jovial.
