The Black Heart Rebellion are a Belgian experimental band from Ghent, formed in 2004 by vocalist Pieter Uyttenhove, guitarists Alex Maekelberg and Valentijn Goethals, bassist Emeriek Verhoye, and drummer Tim Bryon. Their initial style was rooted in hardcore punk, as manifest on their debut album Monologue (2008).

Musically The Black Heart Rebellion have evolved into a tribalistic beast. Guitars lower in the mix, drums and additional percussive elements compliment Pieter Uyttenhove’s impassioned vocals. I’ve been listening to this fascinating album from The Black Heart Rebellion (not to be confused with the Black Heart Procession) a lot lately. The music played by this Belgian collective is hard to define & is different from track to track but the best description I can give without using meaningless adjectives like experimental or alternative would be that it reminds me of the dark folk played by Swans on their recent albums. It also seems a good soundtrack for a shamanic cult as you can expect repetitive parts & a singer that seems to chant sometimes.
