Rounder's third volume in this part of their extended Alan Lomax field recording series focuses on a batch of 1962 recordings showcasing a cultural cross-breed of traditional Asian and newly created, Creolized East Indian music. In the 13 musical selections you'll hear amazing recordings of Hindu wedding songs, Muslim tassa drumming, Madrasi funeral drumming and Trinidadian "local classical" tan singing. The final selection is an equally amazing excerpt of an interview with a Kali religious leader and his chowtal group.

The West Indies is a region of the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean that includes the island countries and surrounding waters of three major archipelagos: the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and the Lucayan Archipelago.

The West Indian island chain known as the Lesser Antilles stretches eastward from the Virgin Islands, southward to Trinidad, and then extends westward toward Aruba to complete an arching half-moon shape. For over half a millennium, the region has been host to a continuous ebb and flow of human migration that has left in its wake a kaleidoscope of cultural hybrids. Later, when slavery was abolished in the British colonies in 1838, a new phase in the history of the Lesser Antilles began. The free Africans often refused to continue to work on the plantations, especially on the islands where there was plenty of untilled soil, which offered them possibilities to return to their own West African style of agriculture.
