When James Galway approached me in 1978 with the idea of writing a flute concerto for him, my initial reaction was, "Oh no, not another wind concerto!" I had already written two (oboe, clarinet) and had planned that my next work would explore quite different territory. While I postponed committing myself on the idea of a flute concerto, I decided to put what I knew of the proposed event together to see if anything interesting and special would result. The orchestra would be the Los Angeles Philharmonic-large and virtuosic-and the soloist, of course, Galway, with his unique and charismatic personality.

John Corigliano's Flute Concerto is expertly tailored as a vehicle for the virtuosity and the highly individual timbre of James Galway, it has a picturesque 'programme' (the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin) that is transparently easy to follow and one indubitable coup de theatre: in its seventh and final movement the rebuffed Piper leads the children of Hamelin offinto the hills and far away, and we hear his piccolo (or is it Galway's penny whistle?) merrily skirling in the distance, far outside the concert hall (an effect expertly rendered in this excellent recording),. The Pied Piper Fantasy is a concerto for flute and orchestra by the American composer John Corigliano. The work was commissioned by the flutist James Galway and it is based on the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The piece was given its world premiere by Galway and the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the conductor Myung-whun Chung at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on February 4, 1982.
