I only knew Amon Tobin from his last CD, Supermodified. That CD strangely enough never really appealed to me. It had some very good songs on it, like '4 ton mantis', but the CD on the whole was rather incomprehensible and inaccesible.

Out From Out Where beams back at us from one of those planets where mutant morlocks throw block parties and robo-dogs get it on with intelligent fire hydrants. It's a future that may not end in dystopia; there are a few user-friendly moments once you get past all the sharp edges. The physics of drums and bass haven't been abandoned altogether, evidenced in the insane opener "Back From Space" as a barrage of tech fills skitter amongst chimes and the surprise accompaniment of heavy metal guitar. But Tobin seems less concerned with showing off tricky breaks and Krupa-on-crack. There are traces of the organic instruments Tobin previously used, especially in the orchestral swells that dramatize a few of the tracks.

Refining his dense, virtuosic production style with virtually every release, Amon Tobin entered the vanguard of electronic producers by accomplishing one of the truly difficult tasks in modern electronica: developing a distinctive sound. Though Tobin prefers grand orchestral themes over a soup of heavily messed-with samples and cavernous beats that reference turntablist rap, funky breaks, and the hyper-efficient techno of Mouse on Mars, his style ranges much farther afield than any of these.
