This Testament album combines primarily popular Russian orchestral works from several 1950's-era recordings, both mono and stereo, that Igor Markevich conducted with the Philharmonia Orchestra, in London at the Abbey Road studios. The one 'outlier' among these selections is the waltz movement by Igor Stravinsky, just shy of 2 minutes. But otherwise, the album stays with familiar works by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, although there is a bit of a twist in one of the Tchaikovsky ballet suites, of which more anon. 71a suite that has many of the greatest hits from the ballet. The interpretation is generally crisp and straightforward, although Markevich seems to trim some sectional repeats in the 'March' and the 'Waltz of the Flowers', to my hearing.

The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra is a Russian classical music radio orchestra established in 1930. It was founded as the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, and served as the official symphony for the Soviet All-Union Radio network. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the orchestra was renamed in 1993 by the Russian Ministry of Culture in recognition of the central role the music of Tchaikovsky plays in its repertoire
