On the surface, it may seem that pairing soul survivor Bettye LaVette with Southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers is a match made in hell, and no one could be blamed for that assumption. Since LaVette singed to Anti for 2005's I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, an album produced by Joe Henry that brought her back into the public eye after more than 30 years (she did record and continued to sing, and was in no way retired), the stakes were higher for her return effort. Label president Andy Kaulkin is a cagey guy who understands that milking a successful formula isn't the way to make.
Soul music veteran Bettye LaVette sees things come full circle with her 2007 studio release The Scene of the Crime. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama ( the scene of the crime ), 35 years after her 1972 album, Child of the Seventies, was shelved by Atlantic Records, it fires back on all cylinders. Before the Money Came (The Battle of Bettye Lavette), the one original composition co-written with producer and Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood, captures LaVette’s deep pain and bitterness over this career-inhibiting move.

Scene of the Crime is an album that has been a lifetime in the making, and it was fully worth the wait. From its song selection to the production choices and the powerhouse vocal performances, the album plays to every single one of LaVette’s strengths. As such, Scene of the Crime is as comprehensive and as thorough an artistic declaration of self as any in recent memory.
In another life, LaVette could have been as famous as her contemporary Tina Turner. As things stand, she had to wait until 2000 for serious recognition, when her debut album - recorded then shelved in 1972 - was finally released. For her latest, LaVette has returned to the home of Southern soul, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and made a record that stays broadly true to the sound of her past, pitting her delightfully hoarse vocals against electric guitars and fat Hammond organ.
