He then won First Prize at the Mitropoulos Competition in New York, was invited by Karajan to conduct in Salzburg; he then made his conducting debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna and Mahler's Symphony No. 2. With the same orchestra he recorded from 1985 to 1988 his first complete Beethoven symphonies. But his relations with the Viennese formation experienced ups and downs, contrary to those he developed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966. Thirty years later, in 1989, he succeeded Karajan at the head of the prestigious formation, a position he held until 2002.

Title: Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 Artist(s): Leonard Bernstein & The New York Philharmonic Glenn Gould (Pianist) Recording Info: Transferred from Columbia 4-track tapeDate of Recording: 03/20/1961 Venue: Manhattan Center, New York. Gould’s Andante con moto is no Orpheus in Hades, but for the way he refuses to stick to piano, sounds almost defiant. Of course HDTT makes all the difference for the strong natural base line we’re getting here, both from piano and orchestra, with Bernstein fully in harmony with his soloist this time and responding, after all, with a rich and diversified orchestral palette, especially in the tuttis. By the end of the Rondo you’ll be pressing the repeat button. Mahler Symphony No. 2 - Georg Solti London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (Pure DSD). Bruno Walter Conducts Beethoven. Bruno Walter was always a most persuasive advocate of the gentler Beethoven-at least, that's what everyone thought until his stereo Beethoven cycle was remastered onto CD, revealing a much stronger musical profile than had been suspected. But that just made the cycle's best performances sound better still-and here they are, together on one midpriced CD! It's amazing that a man in his 80s, as Walter was when these performances were recorded, could take what was essentially a pickup orchestra and turn in performances of such power and authority.
