The hungry i was a nightclub in San Francisco, originally located in the North Beach neighborhood. It played a major role in the history of stand-up comedy in the US. It was launched by Eric "Big Daddy" Nord, who sold it to Enrico Banducci in 1951. The club moved to Ghirardelli Square in 1967 and operated mostly as a rock music venue until it closed in 1970.

This 6 track recording opens with "Sudden Supernature", a fastish piece of what might be described as mild, bright Rock-Pop. The denser sound here acts as a good canvas over which MARTYN BATES paints his distinctive voice which sounds younger & more fresh-spring-water-bright now it has shed the slight Americanised twang to it - one of the most commercially catchy songs I've heard from the ASR stable. A microscopic speck of strange sound acts as the second track, making "April Brings The Sky Down" track 3. It has a little more of the EIG sound to it - the rattling guitar sound & bright punch punctuation sounds. Again it has a hooky sound, showing they were leaning towards a more commercial vein. It ends with strange panning / mixing techniques, whiting out to zero. "Two Steps Forward" again has a distinctive catchiness and a grandeur which EIG never quite created. The harmonica is perhaps the only sign of their 70's roots, except maybe a leaning towards almost improvised breaks. Another odd little untitled guitar piece lasting around 7 seconds heralds "Rose Elegy", bringing the LOTUS EATERS to mind, although this might be suggestion from memory - the last time I saw MARTYN on-stage was supporting them - but there's the barely-sung-above-a-whisper voice & the gentle harmonic sound, warming & timeless, making comparisons obvious. If you like his voice, you'll find some of their best material to date here & no disappointments. And if you aren't familiar with the sound but are interested, this would make a perfect starting point.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
