Complete your Dexter Gordon collection. Before Coltrane influenced Gordon, Gordon's playing influenced Coltrane and you can hear similarities with a young Coltrane here. This isn't pushing any boundaries, there's nothing really special on this, but it's consistent, there are no duds, it's nice enough, just OK though.

Little was heard of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon on-record during the 1950s; in fact this somewhat obscure LP (y, in one of their reissue programs, also released these performances) was one of Gordon's only three appearances on record (two as a leader) during 1953-1959. He fronts a quintet with pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, drummer Chuck Thompson, and the forgotten trumpeter Jim Robinson, and sounds pretty strong on the straight-ahead material

Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was one of the first players of the instrument in the bebop idiom of musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned over 40 years.
