Nerf Herder scored an unexpected novelty hit in 1997 with "Van Halen," a jab at Sammy Hagar. By that point, Van Halen wasn't very contemporary, and staleness seems to be Nerf Herder's specialty. How to Meet Girls, the second release by these Weird Al Yankovic wannabes, is awfully toothless, which wouldn't be so bad if their targets were fresh

Like their debut album of Weezer-esque post-grunge punk-pop, the band's sophomore effort How to Meet Girls is approximately half an hour's worth of the goofiness and smart-alecky cynicism you'd expect from aforementioned media-junkie types. It's all jokey and willfully disposable, of course, and while the band makes vaguely self-deprecating references to being sexually unappealing geeks, it's all taken to a ridiculous extreme, ensuring that nothing serious is ever really addressed.

Nerf Herder caught a break when a demo of their song "Sorry" fell into the hands of Lagwagon singer Joey Cape, who was looking for bands to sign to his small independent My Records label. Initially approached only about including "Sorry" on a various-artists compilation, Nerf Herder ended up recording a ten-song eponymous debut for the label, with Cape co-producing. In 1996, a goofy ode to "Van Halen" became a local smash thanks to a San Francisco modern rock radio station, which helped spread the song around the country. Marko also departed quickly, and the band recorded its second album, How to Meet Girls, with Justin Fisher on bass. Completed in the summer of 1999, the record was finally released in early 2000 by the indie label Honest Don's. American Cheese next appeared in August 2002, followed by more touring with yet another new bassist, Ben Pringle.
