Horses, Patti Smith’s 1975 debut album, received mass adulation for the inventive use of her poetry and her band’s keen ear that cocked towards rock history with a knowing assurance. Radio Ethiopia, the 1976 follow-up, was in many ways even more challenging. The title track was a ten-minute poetry and guitar jam that took the roots of beatnik rage and fused them with an atonality that would become New York’s No Wave scene.
A schizophrenic album in which the many elements that had worked so well together on Horses now seemed jarringly incompatible, with Radio Ethiopia Smith and her band encountered the same development problem the punks would - as they learned their craft and competence set in, they lost some of the that had made their music so appealing.
On her second album, Patti Smith lays back, refusing to assert herself as she did on last year’s Horses. The key is in the billing: on Radio Ethiopia, her group dominates. But while Smith can be an inventive, sometimes inspired writer and performer, her band is basically just another loud punk-rock gang of primitives, riff-based and redundant. The rhythm is disjointed, the guitar chording trite and elementary. Even at best ( Distant Fingers, for instance), the Patti Smith Group isn’t much more than a distant evocation of psychedelic amateurs like Clear Light.
Released October 22, 1976. Radio Ethiopia Tracklist. 1. Ask the Angels by Patti Smith Lyrics. 2. Ain't It Strange by Patti Smith Lyrics. 3. Poppies by Patti Smith Lyrics. 4. Pissing in a River by Patti Smith Lyrics.
Producer Jack Douglas gave "the Patti Smith Group," as it was now billed, a hard rock sound, notably on the side-opening "Ask the Angels" and "Pumping (My Heart)," songs that seemed aimed at album-oriented rock radio. But the title track was a ten-minute guitar extravaganza that pushed the group's deliberate primitivism closer to amateurish thrashing. A schizophrenic album in which the many elements that had worked so well together on Horses now seemed jarringly incompatible, with Radio Ethiopia Smith and her band encountered the same development problem the punks would – as they learned their craft and competence set in, they lost some of the that had made their music so appealing. It's priggish if not stupid to complain that Radio Ethiopia's "four chords are not well played.
