Pere Ubu's 1989 album Cloudland seemed like a strange pop anomaly to many longtime fans, but unbeknown to them the group had something even slicker up its sleeve. Gil Norton, best known for his work with the Pixies, was brought in to produce 1991's Worlds in Collision, and it marked an even more dramatic attempt to fuse Pere Ubu's sensibilities with the pop mainstream (which, in the year Nirvana would break through with Nevermind, probably didn't seem quite as forbidding a place as it once did)
Redirected from Worlds in Collision (Pere Ubu album)). Worlds in Collision is Pere Ubu's eighth studio album. The album continues in the glossy pop mold found on their previous studio album, Cloudland.
Pere Ubu is an American rock group formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. Despite a variety of long-term band members, singer David Thomas is the only constant. While the band achieved little commercial success, they have exerted a wide influence on subsequent underground music.

The work retains an experimental edge, but a song like the stirring opening track Oh Catherine is pure pop with its lovely melody and poetic lyrics. Case in point, the group's early 90s release "Worlds in Collision" may have a cover that is graced by disgracefully childish artwork, but underneath the offsetting packaging there lies a brilliantly conceived pop album that is in every way as deserving of critical acclaim as the band's more well known peers, which include The Pixies and to a certain extent. On Worlds in Collision, Pere Ubu knows they are forever bound for obscurity, but they continue to pursue a pleasing and poppy sound nevertheless.

With Pere Ubu on hiatus since 1982s excellent Song Of The Bailing Man, David Thomas had recorded a& much-praised solo album and the band had now signed to a major label. In a period of rampant world commercialism, what would happen next? Another crucial era for the band unraveled, Pere Ubus journey charted new undulating territory and so began a three-album escapade that retooled our understanding of what pop music is. Solid as the band can be, it's also likely to dissolve songs from the bottom up. For all Pere Ubu's uncertainty, the band isn't arbitrary; its music has the.
