Os Afro-sambas is a 1966 album by Baden Powell and Vinícius de Moraes. It is ranked number 29 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Brazilian Albums. Considered a watershed in MPB for fusing various elements of African sound with samba, Os Afro-sambas was recorded by Baden Powell, Vinícius de Moraes, and Quarteto em Cy in 1966. In the mid-1960s Vinícius was fascinated by an LP of samba de roda songs with candomblé influences from Bahia

Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, ('Girl from Ipanema', 'Chega de Saudade' and 'Insensatez' are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialization of the movement in the mid '60s. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell's melodic gifts with Bahian Folk traditions and Gregorian chant. I'm a fan of Tropicalia, Brazilian Nordeste and Forro. Os Afro Sambas doesn't fit neatly into any category. Vinicius and Baden both had roots in Bossa Nova, but this album was their intentional attempt to move beyond it. It's experimental with wonderful hooks, spontaneous lead vocals, haunting Gregorian female vocals, spare songs and loose, but perfect, production.
