THE BEATLES - WHITE ALBUM OVERVIEW: In November 1968, millions of double LPs were shipped to record stores worldwide ahead of that tumultuous year’s most anticipated music event: the November 22nd release of The BEATLES (soon to be better known as ‘The White Album’). Olivia still has the tapes and so Giles was able to re-visit the original tape to work on these demos.

The Beatles never sounded better. The drums and bass are louder and clearer on the remixes. It's soThe Beatles never sounded better. An album where not only the splendor of the Beatles is more intense, but of all the genres with which they work, to reinvent them or give them another dimension, or even to create. Subjects as illuminating as they are obscure, which make this album still current and important, as it was in that year of 68, where all things seem to be summarized and performed in this album, and this art, with a terrifying and dazzling depth.

The "Esher Demos" is the Beatles unplugged. You hear the band working as a band-the acrimony that would later split the band apart is absent. These (a few tracks showed up on volume three of the "Anthology" series) are beautiful, relaxed versions of the album's songs in good/excellent sound-clean and open sounding-especially for tracks recorded fairly casually at Harrison's home. There's two CDs on the inside front cover and on the facing page is the Blu-Ray disc. The other discs are in the back of the book. Hope in finding the Beatles' masterwork was almost lost, until I noticed our cedar chest in the living room was locked. So naturally I hunted around for the key. The key was eventually found, the chest was opened, and hidden beneath some photo albums and blankets I found my treasure.

Clearly, the Beatles' two main songwriting forces were no longer on the same page, but neither were George and Ringo. Lennon and McCartney stuck to the traditional allotment of two Harrison songs per LP, but it's clear from "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the canned soul of "Savoy Truffle," the haunting "Long, Long, Long," and even the silly "Piggies" that he had developed into a songwriter who deserved wider exposure. Some of these surprises are subtle, amounting to slight turns of phrases, but there are also major revelations, including a looser, strum-along "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and a version of "Good Night" shorn of its strings that finds Ringo supported by plucked guitar and harmonies from the rest of the Beatles.

In late May, 1968, the Beatles convened at guitarist George Harrison’s English country home with an extraordinary body of raw materials for their next album. At 30 tracks on two LPs and dubbed The White Album for its blank-canvas sleeve, it was the group’s longest, most eclectic and emotionally blunt record – an admission of frayed nerves and strained bonds in the zigzag of garage-roots rock, delicate balladry, proto-metal fury, country ham and radical experiment.

The highly anticipated Beatles’ White Album reissue will arrive on Nov. 9, complete with new mixes and previously unheard demos and session recordings. The release comes almost exactly 50 years since the Beatles' self-titled LP first appeared and went on to become better known by its unofficial name.
