The great roots singer and producer Vivian Jackson aka Yabby You aka Jesus Dread passed away on the 12th January in Clarendon, Jamaica. Born in Kingston in 1946, he was the author of many classics such as Conquering Lion, Rally Round Jahovah, Jah Vengeance, Deliver Me From My Enemies, Love Thy Neighbour, Deliverance, Ballistic Dread Locks, Dread Locks Man, Black Starliner, Natty Bongo. Jackson and Prophets labels in Jamaica. One of the most crucial B&F compilations, if also one of the most obsessive - no less than five versions of 'Jah Vengeance', for instance, follow the original at the close of the first CD. This is one reason why it's so great though - few other collections give you the chance to see rhythms evolving into so many amazingly diverse and subtle new forms, especially in Tubby's hands. Tracklist: Disk 1: 01. Yabby U - Love Thy Neighbour 02. Yabby U - Conquering Lion 03.

I'd just like to make a comment about PS releases. Do keep in mind, PS releases from the mid to late 90s sound great, even compared to some original JAs & UKs (yes, I've side-by-sided). However, the current 05s+ (or so) are shit, just as many labels that are reissuing reggae (or anything) are shit. Bullwackie's, Greensleeves, Trojan, etc. All of these labels have been bought and sold, probably a few times. And currently, almost all of them are putting out dull, digi-ripped crap, that's just the world we live in. To be fair, the few current Greensleeves reissues I have aren't too shabby. Digi-sourced sure, but well done. The quality of recent reissues has declined drastically in the past decade. As long as dipshits that just got into 'Vinyls' exist, there will be a sea of people cashing in on simply 'pressing a CD to vinyl'. Outside of any label that's giving you a description of source, work done, representing quality of transfer, etc. Chances are, it's shit. That's not going to change. I've bought a few dozen cheaper reissues over the years when I find them at closeout prices. But no one should ever drop $25-40 on a reissue, and expect quality if it's not from a reputable source that takes care and pride in what they do.There are some reissue labels (like PS) who in the 90s were doing good work, because they had to sell to a small, very discerning group of weirdos who still played vinyl. Now, it's hip, it's cool, it's a trend (that seemingly won't end). So, again, as long as there's a 17 year old out there that just wants a cover, more-or-less, you should expect all this stuff to sound like shit. The market will always be the market.
