The Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, K498, is the first of the triumvirate of works that Mozart wrote for Anton Stadler (if one excludes the Divertimenti, K 439b and the various Notturni). It was written in the aftermath of Figaro. In a comparative sense, it's less acclaimed than the Clarinet Quintet and Concerto. Mozart presumably played the viola part himself. I once knew a violist who lived in mortal fear of the Kegelstatt Trio; in her view, it was so much easier to participate in a late Beethoven String Quartet than brave the translucency of this work.
