Raoul and the Kings of Spain is the fifth studio album by the British pop-rock band Tears for Fears, released on 10 October 1995. Like the band's previous album, Elemental (1993), it is essentially a solo effort by Roland Orzabal-neither album being made with the involvement of Curt Smith, who had left the band at that time. The album, according to Orzabal, has a recurring theme of familial relationships and delves into his own Spanish heritage

Roland Orzabal (under the Tears For Fears name) really did it with this very personal and mature album. Raoul and the Kings of Spain is filled with deep songs of God, love, family and relationships in his own words. The bonus tracks are also amazing and worth listening to and Queen of Compromise is another tribute to Roland's wife. Raoul and the Kings of Spain is like the personal album of Roland because after all, it shows his heritage and his relationships between his family and Roland has made an album that is filled with so much passion and imagery

A few years later, Roland released the album Raoul and the Kings of Spain. The album polarized fans and critics alike and became a commercial failure. Now, the previous album Elemental was a big step backwards, a step in the wrong direction (though it is a decent record, it pales horribly in comparison to the other albums released before it). But this time around, this album is a nice big step in the right direction. However, Me and My Big Ideas is one of Tears For Fears’ best ballads with a breathtaking baroque pop-esque background and Oleta Adams’ soulful vocals. As a whole, Raoul and the Kings of Spain is a respectable effort from the remaining TFF member, Roland Orzabal that almost lives up to their first three albums as well as an admirable effort that TFF fans can appreciate as a comeback from the deviation in their last album.
