Anthems for the People.
Started in 2003, the album saw many delays, as the band sole member, frontman and founder Richard Patrick, took several breaks to pursue other musical interests, notably The Damning Well in 2003 and Army of Anyone from 2005 to 2007. Upon the breakup of Army of Anyone, Patrick decided to revisit the old material and finish it up for a final release.

A third Libertines album once seemed about as likely as a fifth Smiths LP. Like recovery, Anthems for Doomed Youth takes things one step at a time. It's an absorbing listen front to back, rich with mood and gorgeous melodies. But Anthems isn't bitter or dismissive. Opener "Barbarians" is a gimlet-eyed spaghetti western rallying optimism for the broken. Lifting the guitar from Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me", the title track starts out as a grand proclamation about the futile spoils of war and revolution, espoused with Barât's typical camp flair. But then he shreds the glorious fantasy, revealing an ignominious reality with a comic turn of phrase: "In the pub that night, racking out the lines of shite/ Putting to right all of the world's great wrongs.
More than a decade after their eponymous second album paired a commercial breakthrough with the total implosion of the band, Pete Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall and Gary Powell return on a long-desired third record. It was worth the wait. From the drowsy skank of Gunga Din to the shambling, frantic squall of Heart of the Matter, Barât and Doherty favor newer material (only the wistful Anglicana of You’re My Waterloo comes from their vault of previously unreleased songs) and revive one of modern rock’s most blazingly charismatic partnerships in style. Anthems For Doomed Youth (Deluxe).
