Since 1999, on the initiative of then-Concertgebouw managing director Martijn Sanders, it has proudly borne the name of Het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Mackrel started his professional career at the age of ten and at twenty became the Count Basie band’s youngest ever drummer. Mackrel played with orchestras such as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, The Carla Bley Very Large Band and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band. He grew from sideman to bandleader in his many partnerships with European orchestras such as the UMO big band from Helsinki (Finland) and the WDR big band from Cologne (Germany). In 2010 he returned to the Count Basie Orchestra as bandleader, where he remained until 2013. The partnership with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw dates back to 2004, when he made several appearances as a drummer.

The JOC is a world-class orchestra, and contemporary big band jazz cannot be played much better. If part one of Crossroads swings harder and more consistently than part two, that should be ascribed to the music itself, not to any shortcoming by the ensemble, which is spot-on throughout. The running time for the two discs totals eighty-five minutes, roughly five minutes more than a single disc can accommodate.

In 2010 ontvangt het orkest een Edison voor de cd Blues for the Date, een jaar voordat Meutgeert afscheid neemt als orkestleider. Onderscheidingen In 1998 ontvangt Meutgeert de Peter Schilperoort Award, in 1999 krijgt hij de Bird Award uitgereikt op het North Sea Jazz Festival en in 2015 wordt hij onderscheiden met de Concertgebouw Jazz Award

At the Opera House is a 1958 live album by Ella Fitzgerald. The album presents a recording of the 1957 Jazz at the Philharmonic Concerts. This series of live jazz concerts was devised by Fitzgerald's manager Norman Granz, they ran from 1944 to 1983. Featured on this occasion, in 1957, are Fitzgerald and the leading jazz players of the day in an onstage jam session.
