Mother Africa ‎(LP, Album). Where their other albums fall squarely in the Afrobeat genre (uptempo and funky, with electric organs and fuzz and wah guitar commonly featured), Mother Africa relies largely on native and acoustic instrumentation. Laid back and softer than the rest of their catalog, it could come as a disappointment to someone looking for another Danger or Sunshine.

The Lijadu Sisters: Mother Africa There was apparently a Shanachie best-of I never heard back in '84, but in this heyday of obscurantist crate-digging, now the entire four-album catalogue of these beauteous second cousins of Fela and Wole Soyinka will be released over a one-year span.

The second of the Lijadu Sisters’ four Afrodisia albums, 1977’s Mother Africa is, from one perspective, markedly different to its predecessor, Danger, released the previous year. The twins’ glowing melodies and warm harmonies are as before, but the accompanying band’s lineup and arrangements, both still co-directed by Biddy Wright, owe less to rock and funk, and more to traditional Yoruba music. The core band comprises Wright on guitars, sometimes electric but as often acoustic and played in palm-wine/highlife style; talking drums; and a shekere
