British Sea Power are a six-piece indie rock band based in Brighton, England, although three of the band hail originally from Kendal in Cumbria. On 2005's Open Season, British Sea Power traded in some of the chilly post-rock angst that fueled their 2003 debut with a more streamlined, radio-ready approach that left some listeners yearning for the lo-fi majesty of songs like "Carrion" and "Fear of Drowning. Those tunes were still there, but they demanded repeated spins before revealing their fruits, a tactic that the stoic Cumbria, England, quartet employs again - but with far more breathtaking results - on its third full-length, Do You Like Rock Music?
As far as Brighton, England’s British Sea Power are concerned, the 1980s never ended. Or at least the epic soundsweeps, the chiming U2-like guitars, the dramatic tension, the heavy reverbs of the recording era are not to be discarded.
Album · 2008 · 13 Songs. Following a brief but dramatic choral intro, British Sea Power’s third album swiftly goes about answering its titular query in the affirmative. Bearing the serrated edges of their early singles, Lights Out for Darker Skies and Atom fuse post-punk urgency and garage-band scrappiness-all needling guitar riffs and gut-punching rhythms. Do You Like Rock Music? British Sea Power.
I should start out by saying that I do not know everything about British Sea Power. Yet, the song which shows them just cut loose and rock out, is a good reference point to Do You Like Rock Music?, as it shows what often makes this album both work and not work. It should be said that Rock Musicâ?s first few songs are almost as good as that aforementioned song, yet in a different way. The songs are less noisy, not as cool and slick, yet more organic. In that, it may slightly be standard indie rock, but are also done par-excellence. The jump-starter track, "All in It," walks a good line between being mood-setting and an all-out rocker.
