Carmen Mercedes McRae (April 8, 1922 – November 10, 1994) was an American jazz singer. She is considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century and is remembered for her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretation of lyrics. McRae was inspired by Billie Holiday, but she established her own voice. She recorded over sixty albums and performed worldwide.

The Sound of Silence is a 1968 studio album by Carmen McRae, produced by Joel Dorn. Carmen McRae - vocals. Joel Dorn - producer. Lou Raderman - concertmaster. Jimmy Jones - arranger, conductor. Shorty Rogers - arranger, director. Buddy Childers - trumpet. Jack Sheldon - trumpet. Jimmy Zito - trumpet. Lew McCreary - trombone. Dick Nash - trombone. Vincent DeRosa - French horn. Jim Horn - saxophones. John Lowe - saxophones. Norman Simmons - electric piano, piano. Tommy Tedesco - guitar.

Whether a song qualifies as a standard or not, McRae demonstrates how even lesser material, when interpreted by a performer who is both a complete musician and a gifted dramatic actress, can be raised to the level of timeless art. The pristine audio of this 2008 Spanish import, moreover, allows the listener to catch the subtle rhythmic and harmonic communication between the singer and her responsive bassist, Victor Sproles. Personnel: Carmen McRae: vocals; Norman Simmons: piano; Victor Sproles: bass; Stu Martin: drums. Since the cover of this album displays the words "Carmen McRae & Friends" with the words "Thad Jones, Cat Anderson" in smaller print beneath them, one might assume that the "friends" referred to are Jones and Anderson. Actually, this no-frills album is a condensation of the Personal Choice Records release Jazz Gala '79 (PC-51001), recorded at the European MIDEM convention in January 1979 featuring various artists, among them McRae, Jones's orchestra, and Anderson
