SPATULA: Despina By Land. This CD has seen the inside of my player quite a bit since arriving - the music is alarm-ingly unique, emotional and quirky. Guitar, cello, keyboards and drums are used to create mini-epic compositions that employ melancholy melodies and unexpected developments.

C'est La Vie (English: That's life) is the eighth studio album released by Greek singer Despina Vandi. Initially, the album was distributed exclusively via a bundling with the newspaper "Real News" on 13 June 2010, marks the first LP released on label "The Spicy Effect", as well as her first studio album of new material since 2007's 10 Hronia Mazi.

Spatula belongs to the third generation of Chapel Hill (North Carolina) college-rock. The mind behind Spatula is Chuck Johnson (guitar), who recorded the early singles, Radio Helmet/ Carmike (Now Sound, 1994) and Blue Crab (Now Sound, 1994), and the album Even the Thorny Acacia (Jesus Christ, 1994) with little more than the help of a drummer. The sound is indebted to Steve Albini and Polvo. Johnson shines on the 26-minute mini-album Under the Veil of Health (Squealer, 1996), crafting instrumental vignettes that are vigorous without being hardcore and that are murky without being obnoxious. Johnson's mostly instrumental art finally came to complete maturation with Despina By Land (Squealer, 1998), recorded by a trio (including Chris Eubanks on cello and bass).
