Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, was composed in 1805–1806. Beethoven was the soloist in the public premiere as part of the concert on 22 December 1808 at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. It is scored for solo piano and an orchestra consisting of a flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings.

Gilels recorded Beethoven's concertos three times, and this set with Szell is simply the best. Recordings are made in the 60's, and Gilels was in his best "Beethoven-form" then. When he was younger, he preferred to super-virtuoso romantic pieces, but from 1950's he started to play Beethoven more and more. These interpretations are quite plastic, Gilels plays this like Viennesse-classical pieces should be played: everything is clear, but nothing is exaggrerated.
