The Don Ellis Orchestra was masterful at making the most of dynamics; they went from poignant, soft, and gentle to hurricane velocity with effortless ease. As a bandleader, Ellis was exacting, he had to be, when you've got 21 guys playing in 19/4 time there's little margin for error. In this regard, Ellis was a marvelous anomaly; he combined the fearless experimentation of the late 60's with a rigorous discipline conspicuously absent from most of what was in the air back then. I was 17 in 1967 when I first heard this. It's the kind of album that stopped me dead in my tracks, and I thought "I didn't know you could DO that!" This was a real departure from the music of its time in terms of the use of electronics, unusual time signatures, and tricking your ear into expecting one musical idiom, then giving you something complete different - and you didn't mind at all.

For his first studio recording with his colorful big band, Don Ellis utilized five trumpets, three trombones, five reeds, Mike Lang on keyboards, three bassists, drummer Steve Bohannon, and three percussionists to perform some remarkable new music. The most memorable selection is "Indian Lady" (accurately described as a "hoedown in 5/4"), which with its false endings is often quite humorous. For the first time Ellis opened his band to the influence of rock (making liberal use of electronics) and the results lend themselves to some hilarity.

that album and if you notice the Matrix Runout is the same as for the US version. This means he record was likely pressed in the same pressing plant but they put a label with made in Canada. The only other difference is on the back cover they took off the New York Address and the printed in USA. This was done to avoid the special import tax. for more info http://www.jerryosborne.com/canada.pdf
