Andrzej Panufnik: Sinfonia Votiva Symphony No. 8 Roger Sessions: Concerto for Orchestra. This is the same as Symphony 8, Concerto for Orchestra. In capsule: fine compositions - Panufnik's quite original in its two contrasting movements, the first subtle and subdued with sparse instrumentation, the second dramatic, agitated, violent, with near-cacophonous brass fanfares; and Sessions' - well, if you like the orchestral music of Schoenberg, and especially his Variations opus 31, you're likely, as I do, to enjoy Sessions, and otherwise, you're likely not.
Disc: 1. 1. Symphony No. 8 ('Sinfonia Votiva'): 1. Andante rubato, con devozione. 2. 8 ('Sinfonia Votiva'): 2. Allegro assai, con passione. 3. Concerto for Orchestra. Also, Sessions’ atonality is less stark that Panufnik’s. Sessions work is more difficult to describe than Panufnik, but equally if not more enjoyable. This CD showcases two outstanding works of the late 20th Century, Andrezj Panufnik's "Sinfonia Votiva" (Symphony No. 8) and Roger Sessions' "Concerto for Orchestra. Both pieces were written to commemorate the Centennial of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1981.

Two of the resulting works are recorded here-the Concerto for Orchestra by Roger Sessions, and the Sinfonia Votiva of Andrzej Panufnik. Among the composers invited by the orchestra in addition to those represented on this recording were Sandor Balassa, Leonard Bernstein (Divertimento for Orchestra), John Corigliano (Promenade Overture, performed by the associated Boston ‘Pops’ Orchestra), John Harbison, Leon Kirchner, Peter Lieberson, Donald Martino, and Olly Wilson. The first performances of Sessions’s Concerto for Orchestra took place in Symphony Hall on 23 and 24 October 1981. The first performance of Panufnik’s Sinfonia Votiva was given on 28 January 1982.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an American orchestra based in Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of the five major American symphony orchestras commonly referred to as the "Big Five". Founded in 1881, the BSO plays most of its concerts at Boston's Symphony Hall and in the summer performs at Tanglewood. Andris Nelsons is the current music director of the BSO. Bernard Haitink currently holds the title of conductor emeritus of the BSO, and Seiji Ozawa has the title of BSO music director laureate.
