Play It Again, Sam is a 1969 Broadway play written by and starring Woody Allen. A substantial hit, it ran for more than a year and helped build Allen's reputation as a performer who could portray a comedic romantic lead as well as the neurotic persona for which he was best known at the time. The play became the basis for a 1972 film of the same name, starring Allen and directed by Herbert Ross.

The long-lost "Making Of Play It Again, Sam" featurette included a cut scene of Woody watching a mini-skirted girl climb a ladder in his film magazine office. The still of this scene was used on many foreign posters for the film. Play It Again, Sam" is a bit of an anomaly for an Allen comedy. It's set in San Francisco, not New York, and is directed by Herbert Ross rather than Allen himself. But it's very funny, kind of poignant, and a clever way of examining the foibles of hooking up, circa the 1970s.

Indeed a hidden gem on the elusive Amerama label. Too bad so little is known about this imprint, but one thing is for sure: "Play It Again, Sam!" is an absolute must have for every self respecting soul, funk and rhythm 'n' blues aficionado. On one hand we have the kick-ass title track and Geo's outstandingly danceable rendition of The Beatles' "Can't By Me Love" -both definite floorfillers for the DJs amongst us- and on the other hand we have the super relaxed soul cuts like "Say It Isn't So", "Can't We Make It Easier" and the laid back late night blues diamond "Night Life". Let us not forget Geo's interpretations of Otis Redding's "Dock Of The Bay" and the classic Eugene McDaniels penned "Feel Like Makin' Love" and you got yourself an outstanding slab of vinyl that demands to be played over and over. Given the more or less 'mixed bag' of styles in the discography of the Amerama label, one wonders what their policy was, but it's clear that whoever signed off for the release of this excellent album deserves five stars. In short: close the curtains, dim the lights a bit, pour yourself a good glass of Scotch, put your feet on the table, light up your best cigar and enjoy these 36 minutes of superb music. Last but not least: whatever happened to Geo. Brooks? Is there anybody out there who knows a little bit more about him?
I love Mercedes
His version of "Feel Like Makin' Love" is killer! This is one of the most unique soul LPs I have heard in a long time.

Totally obscure, but absolutely lovely relaxed soul record, with excellent arrangements. Especially noteworthy are Irving Berlin's "Say it isn't so", plus Geo's own "Can't we make it easier".
