Terry & the Pirates, fronted by singer/songwriter Terry Dolan and featuring lead guitarist John Cipollina, were a staple of the San Francisco Bay club scene of the 1970s and '80s. In 1990, Dolan assembled Silverado Trail, an album of previously unreleased tracks, and Return to Silverado, compiled by San Francisco rock experts Mike Somavilla and Mick Skidmore for the Acadia imprint of the British Evangeline label, is a vastly expanded version of that 11-track collection.

Terry and the Pirates was an action-adventure comic strip created by cartoonist Milton Caniff. The Dragon Lady leads the evil pirates; conflict with the pirates was diminished in priority when World War II started.

Terry & the Pirates were led by guitarist/singer Terry Dolan, a Connecticut native who relocated to San Francisco during the area's notorious Summer of Love in 1965. Dolan played out locally during this time, performing at coffeehouses, clubs, and festivals alongside such renowned national acts as Elvin Bishop, . King, Taj Mahal, and Blue Cheer, among others. But for reasons unknown, the album was shelved. Although understandably disappointed, Dolan carried on, forming Terry & the Pirates in the summer of 1973. In 2007, a reissue of Return to Silverado, plus a bonus disc of rare, live, and previously unreleased material, came out. ~ Greg Prato.
