Friedman released Kinky Friedman in 1974 for ABC Records, then toured with Bob Dylan in 1975-6. In 1975, Friedman and his band taped an Austin City Limits show which was never aired. According to the show's executive producer, Terry Lickona, this is the first and only time in the show's long history that an episode went unaired. Lickona told the Austin Chronicle "I've seen it many times – it's a very popular party tape among friends. I think it was a great show, and it might be as offensive today as it was back then. In early 1976, he joined Bob Dylan on the second leg of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour.

Here it is: the only Austin City Limits program in over 30 years that has never aired on TV - anywhere. Long before the Kinkster became a celebrated mystery writer in New York City, and waaay long before he became a candidate for Governor of the Great State of Texas, there was Kinky the "country" music singer and songwriter of the mid-1970's. There he was in November of 1979: a paragon, a veritable pioneer of political incorrectness set to music, and there was nobody quite like him on the Austin music scene.

An Austin City Limits appearance from 1975 that was deemed unfit to air finally saw the light of day thanks to New West Records' 2007 release of Live from Austin, TX. In 2015, Friedman returned with his first proper studio album since 1976's landmark Lasso From El Paso. Released by Avenue A Records, The Loneliest Man I Ever Met features a number of new originals, along with covers by Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson, who also guest on the album.
