Love in the Time of Science is the fourth album by the Icelandic singer/songwriter Emilíana Torrini. It was her first album to be released internationally (her earlier albums being released only in her native Iceland). The album was recorded and released in 1999, and was produced by Roland Orzabal and Alan Griffiths of Tears For Fears, who also wrote two tracks for the album.

Torrini's beautiful vocals match the translucence of Beth Orton and Kate Bush and the undying passion of Björk. Her debut Love in the Time of Science is a shimmering delight of gossamer lyrics and swooning instrumental imagery. Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal assists with production and songwriting, enabling Torrini's voice to soar over intricate basslines and synth programming. In addition to her dramatic roar, Torrini brings a subtle hush to her songs as well. Tuna Fish" and "Dead Things" are deep reflections of emotional pain and social frustration.

Torrini has a capable voice with a surprising range. She also has a throatiness that she should use more often than the little girl voice that seems to predominate here. This is the kind of music you'd want to hear while smoking the best there is in an Amsterdam coffee house. Best tracks are: To be free Wednesday's Child Dead Things (which kind of rocks out, for trip-hop) Unemployed In Summertime (a lovely gem) Easy Fingertips (has a great groove). In that respect she reminds me of the band Ivy, although Ivy is more pop- and synth-oriented, whereas (at least on this album) Torrini includes real and acoustic instruments in the skilled production. And if you listen closely to the lyrics of some of these songs, they're pretty sexy.
