After recording a demo tape, she was signed to Columbia Records in 1987 and released her debut studio album Hometown Girl (1987). In June 1989, Carpenter's second studio album State of the Heart was issued, which transitioned more towards country music.

This album has been out a couple of months. I didn’t want to oversell something that in the end doesn’t merit the praise showered upon it. First impressions can be misleading. We can sometimes want something to be good and so dive in with claims of Return to form or The best since. which turn out to be nothing of the sort.

Produced by Dave Cobb, its simple, sturdy arrangements allow the wisdom of Carpenter’s lyrics to maintain our focus throughout all 11 of its gorgeous tracks

Something Tamed Something Wild. What Does It Mean To Travel. Deep Deep Down Heart. Note On A Windshield. Between The Wars (Charleston 1937).

The Things That We Are Made Of doesn’t simply celebrate her success, it doesn’t rely on an attentive audience to numbly accept a collection of songs on their individual merits. What it does is present the listener with new songs that remind us of exactly why Carpenter.

Produced by Dave Cobb. Album The Things That We Are Made Of. The Middle Ages Lyrics. Looking back is not the same as looking forward You can’t see what it is you’re heading toward All that’s visible is what’s left behind The dreams distilled and the dreams discarded What made you leap or left you empty hearted In the moment and in the fullness of time. All along you paid close attention To the answers when a voice asked the question How’d you get here, where do you belong 17 makes us brave and so full of nerve 35 makes us pause but we’re undeterred Never say die and so we push on. And some come to a place of reckoning Try to fix what they find I arrived with the questions still beckoning In the back of my mind To the middle ages.
