Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba (14 June 1949 – 24 April 2016), known professionally as Papa Wemba, was a Congolese singer and musician who played Congolese rumba, soukous, and ndombolo. Sometimes dubbed the "King of Rumba Rock", he was one of the most popular musicians of his time in Africa and played an important role in world music. He was also a fashion icon who popularized the Sape look and style through his musical group Viva la Musica, with whom he performed on stages throughout the world.

This nice album of vocal work from the Congolese superstar Papa Wemba harks back to his childhood in Matongue (nicknamed Molokai by some of the locals). Wemba shows off some nice work with his voice soaring over the textures created by his band and backup vocalists. Moreover, on the initial track, "Excuse Me," he makes his a cappella debut, without the security blanket of light instrumental work that normally accompanies him.

Papa Wemba - Molokai.

Papa Wemba – who has died, aged 66 – was one of Africa’s most celebrated, flamboyant singers, but he also became famous for all the wrong reasons. For one, he became notorious for using his band as a people-smuggling organisation. Wemba was born Jules Shungu Webadio in what was then Léopoldville in the Belgian Congo, and he was influenced by music in his childhood. His adopted mother was a pleureuse, a professional mourner, and the influence of her laments could be heard in heard in some of his slower songs, though he became an international celebrity by matching the emotion that he heard in her singing with to a very different and rousing dance style. On Excuse Me, on the 1998 Molokai album, the king of the sapeurs made his solo a capella debut on a song that showed his emotional range and the influence of his adopted mother. He was one of Africa’s great voices.

In 1993, Wemba renamed his band Molokai, and that name and band make this newest Papa Wemba CD both an aggregation of his past and a new exploration. Wemba delves into an a cappella tune, placing his soaring vocals at the immediate heart of the CD. But then the music churns in, veering between hip, urban dance styles that mesh European pop elements, Wemba's acrobatic vocal techniques and soukous' rumba-fueled rhythms. Molokai also throws truly rock- powered hooks and textures, too, newly energizing Wemba's music without taking away from the layered rhythms.
