Ralph Earl Sutton (November 4, 1922 – December 30, 2001) was an American jazz pianist born in Hamburg, Missouri. He was a stride pianist in the tradition of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. Sutton had a stint as a session musician with Jack Teagarden's band before joining the US Army during World War II. After the war, he played at various venues in Missouri, eventually ending up at Eddie Condon's club in Greenwich Village.

Biography by Scott Yanow. One of the last of the classic New York stride pianists, who combined exuberance and control in equal measures. Last of the Whorehous. alph Sutton. Complete Studio Record. ee Full Discography.

This provocatively titled CD pairs two piano masters-Ralph Sutton and Jay McShann-in a series of duets that evoke images of saloons full of sin and cigar smoke. Joining our two stride-piano giants are bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Gus Johnson-elegant company, indeed! Go Unlimited. Also like the first album, the way Sutton blends his stride with McShann's Kansas City style blues is remarkable. One would think the two styles would be incompatible, but they are symbiotic here. The last track, jazzspeak, is as valuable to me as the music because I am something of an amateur jazz historian and the oral history aspect is compelling.
