Usually, such a studied recording method would drain the life out of each song, but that's not the case with Katy Lied, which actually benefits from the duo's perfectionist tendencies. Each song is given a glossy sheen, one that accentuates not only the stronger pop hooks, but also the precise technical skill of the professional musicians drafted to play the solos. Essentially, Katy Lied is a smoother version of Pretzel Logic, featuring the same cross-section of jazz-pop and blues-rock. The lack of innovations doesn't hurt the record, since the songs are uniformly brilliant.

Gold is a compilation album by Steely Dan, released in 1982. It mostly comprises hits both post-dating and not included on their 1978 Greatest Hits, essentially acting as "Volume 2"; it also features additional album tracks, offering a broad perspective on the band's career to that point
Along with Pretzel Logic, Katy is an album of transition, and perhaps the most impressive thing about both albums is the degree of refinement that both albums display. Unlike the former three albums, however, is Katy's increasing emphasis on texture and jazz
Steely Dan released their 4th album, "Katy Lied", in/ around March of 1975. Katy Lied" stands apart in the Steely Dan discography-apart from "Your Gold Teeth II" with its fairly brief instrumental intro, none of the songs are over 4 minutes long, and also, unlike the previous album "Pretzel Logic", none of the songs here are considerably under 3. Additionally, they temporarily do away with extended instrumental solo passages-as good as the solo passages.
